Leveraging data to more deeply understand and empower AANHPI communities

Change InSight® is the first known national social drivers of health (SDOH) data platform for the nation’s Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities. Powered by the Chinese American Service League, Change InSight® partners with community-based social service organizations across the country to collect, analyze, and disseminate community-level data to uncover the unique issues facing AANHPI communities and encourage and advocate for change.

Community organizations partner with Change InSight® at no cost. As partners, these organizations have access to evaluated data and reports, as well as professional policy and research staff, to help their organization identify and define disparities unique to their clients and communities. Furthermore, partners can use this data to help shape policy specific to the community’s needs and apply for grants to fund solutions to the identified needs.

Together with its partners, Change InSight® will help end disparities in funding and action for AANHPI communities. It will shine a spotlight on the social and health issues affecting AANHPI communities that are not captured by current data collection efforts, such as the U.S. Census, which aggregates data and renders many AANHPI subgroups invisible.

Why Change InSight® is Needed

AANHPI Communities are Poorly Understood

According to the Pew Research Center, the AANHPI population has nearly doubled in just the last two decades, rising from approximately 12 million residents to over 22 million residents. By 2060, the AANHPI population is projected to more than double again, reaching 46 million residents, yet the socioeconomic and health challenges of AANHPI communities remain poorly understood. There is a critical lack of data for the AANHPI community, which is disaggregated by the over fifty Asian ethnic subgroups, hundreds of dialects, and geography.

AANHPI Communities are Overlooked

While the AANHPI population has MORE than doubled in size over the last three decades, foundation funding for AANHPI communities has flatlined. In 2018, a mere $173 million out of $88 billion of philanthropic giving was focused on AANHPI populations, even while overall philanthropic giving has increased. By this measurement, the AANHPI community receives only $0.20 per $100 spent by charitable foundations.

AANHPI Communities Need Disaggregated Data

Aggregate data is one of the biggest civil rights issues facing AANHPI communities across the country. There must be more robust data to demonstrate needs unique to the more than 50 ethnic subgroups under the AANHPI umbrella. Legislators and philanthropic organizations rarely implement new laws or make large grants without tangible examples to prove an issue exists and needs to be addressed. Change InSight® provides agencies across the country with the tools to meet the needs of both government officials and philanthropists.

“Too often, those of us in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander community are categorized together as one monolithic ‘model minority,’ but that is far from the case. There are more than 50 AANHPI ethnic subgroups, and I am pleased to know that Change InSight® will be working to increase the understanding of our community. I’m proud to represent the AANHPI community, the fastest-growing minority population in the United States.”

“At Apna Ghar, we utilize an evidenced-based model to end gender violence. Our community faces unique barriers from many micro and macro conditions. Being able to leverage the powerful Change InSight® data platform will help us dive deeper into these conditions to uncover trends and insights that can lead to positive change for those we serve. We’re excited to be a part of Change InSight® at launch and can’t wait to apply its insights.”

Neha Gill, Apna Ghar Executive Director

Influential management consultant, W. Edwards Deming, was quoted as saying, ‘In God we trust. All others must have data’. During the pandemic, the public learned that doctors and scientists rely heavily on data to make informed decisions. Regrettably, data isn’t equally available for all, especially for our nation’s immigrant communities, which puts them at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to Social Drivers of Health. Change InSight® can inform and empower public health officials, healthcare providers, and our elected officials with precise, data-backed analyses surrounding the unique needs of both large and small immigrant communities. This initiative is an exciting step toward achieving equitable health outcomes for all Americans.”
